Position: Lead Operator Status:
Full-Time, Salary Shift: 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, M-F On Call As Needed

Salary: Competitive, Negotiable Upon Experience

Job Summary: The City of Sparta is seeking a dedicated and skilled Natural Gas Worker-Lead Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for performing maintenance work involving the installation and repair of natural gas utility lines, meters, regulators, and related equipment. The role also includes some supervisory duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • •Perform skilled, semi-skilled, and manual tasks in gas utility installation and maintenance, such as installing service lines, repairing leaks, and more.
  • Conduct testing, take readings, and record various data to ensure the safety and efficiency of gas services.
  • Respond to complaints and emergency calls regarding live gas line breaks and potential leaks, conducting surveys and investigations as needed.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and tools, including service trucks, dump trucks, trenchers, jackhammers, and more.
  • Transport, load, and unload equipment and materials for various projects.
  • Perform general and preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Follow safety procedures and monitor the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and the public.
  • Prepare and complete various forms and reports related to gas leak status, meter changes, and more.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, employees, customers, and other departments to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.
  • Provide emergency or on-call response to service calls after hours, on weekends, or holidays.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of procedures, equipment, and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of natural gas lines.
  • Thorough knowledge of national and state building and construction code standards as they apply to gas utility systems.
  • Ability to interpret survey plats and engineering design plans.
  • Ability to assess gas line, meter, and regulation station problems and identify corrective measures.
  • Strong leadership skills to effectively coordinate, train, and supervise subordinate personnel.
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Ability to communicate orally.
  • Heavy work requiring exertion up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Primarily outdoor work with moderate to high noise levels; occasional indoor work required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain it.
  • Natural gas license(s) from the Public Service Commission.
  • At least two years of experience in construction and/or the operation, maintenance, and repair of a natural gas system.

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing.
  • Subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations within 30 minutes or less.
